‘You don’t have answers to those questions in the very beginning, and I think this gap between not knowing and what people expect causes a lot of anxiety’

Before you start a company, your anxiety level is pretty high. I think that comes from other people’s expectations. The minute you say, “I’m going to start a company,” people have high expectations of what you’re going to achieve—how much profit you’re going to make, what the company is going to look like, things like that. And you don’t have answers to those questions in the very beginning, and I think this gap between not knowing and what people expect causes a lot of anxiety. Next, when you start the company, you get more an idea of the lay of the land, and what you’re doing—this makes the anxiety a bit less, but it’s still present. And then you get to your first client, and social expectations anxiety is present there, too. If you don’t find a client, your first one, people, in any case, people expect that you’ll find one, because that’s just what happens. So, this is sort of a given that you’ll perform, and this sends your anxiety right on up.
